- Boxer leads California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger by 16 points, 50% to 34%. She holds a slightly smaller lead over former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. In that match-up, Boxer picks up 47% of the vote and Fiorina 38%.
While the poll provides generally good news for Boxer, any incumbent who polls below 50% early in a campaign is considered potentially vulnerable. However, a Democrat running in a heavily Democratic state like California is often able to overcome weak poll numbers.
Schwarzenegger is losing statewide support for his role in the state’s recent budget brouhaha including massive tax increases that has Californian’s staging TEA PARTIES acround theb state - 15,000 rallied and railed against taxes at a KFI radio organized rally last week. A Santa Barbara rally hopes to attract a couple thousand folk on April 4th.
Twenty-seven percent (27%) of voters statewide have a Very Favorable opinion of Boxer, who has been in the Senate since 1993, while 34% hold a Very Unfavorable view.
For Schwarzenegger, those numbers are nine percent (9%) Very Favorable and 27% Very Unfavorable. Eight percent (8%) Strongly Approve of the way Schwarzenegger is performing his role as governor while 35% Strongly Disapprove.
Fiorina is far less well known than the two statewide officeholders. Just six percent (6%) have a Very Favorable opinion of her, and 12% hold a Very Unfavorable view. She recently gave a well-received speech to the California Republican State Convention. That speech came a day after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It is not clear what impact that might have on her decision to run for the Senate.
Both Republicans lead Boxer among male voters-Fiorina by nine, Schwarzenegger by two. The incumbent holds wide leads over both among women, topping Fiorina by 24 and Schwarzenegger by 32.
In another polls U. S. Senator Feinstein (D) Ca. led all comers by more than a dozen points to replace Schwarzenegger.
