Charles Richard Drew was an American physician and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge in developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II, saving thousands of allied lives. He protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood from donors of different races since it lacked scientific foundation.
In April 1950 after a long day in surgery he lost control of his car on a rural North Carolina road rolled it over and was badly injured. Denied admittance to a nearby white only hospital he bleed to death before arriving at one that would admit him.
Ironically Drew’s skill and expertise and research in blood transfusions saw him become the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery.
