california-budgetWhy is California short about 50,000 registered nurses, according to the   Labor and Workforce Development Agency?  Because they left along with hundreds of thousands of others trained and talented people fed up with high taxes and cost of living. in recent years. It is something akin to a reversal of the 1930’s “Dust Bowl” westward migration described by John Steinbeck in his famous novel Grapes of Wrath. A chortling article in Sunday’s Sacramento Bee derides “Okies” and “Sooners” as second class which is a favorite of coastal Californians and the government class in general.

Tuesday Obama rejected bailing out the 30 million person state sending California Democrats scrambling for excuses and reasons for his rejection of a budget bailout and repudiation of their juice at the White House.

As a shopworn riddle asks “How do you get from Oklahoma City to Bakersfield, California?” Follow the Ding Dong wrappers. Intentionally snide the reverse now says “Follow the abandoned BMWs.”

Looking past  the author’s smug sarcasm the fact is that as real estate prices have  plummeted in the once Golden State so did property taxes that had flowed in seemingly inexhaustible and in ever increasing amounts into city, county and state coffers only  to be frittered away.

A study by the Santa Barbara News Press pointed out how fast and how many six figure bureaucrats populate its City Hall it did not cite the catastrophic consequences of unfunded 90% retirement payouts. So arrogant was that City it pulled its workers out of Social Security piling those costs onto l;ocal taxpayers. Such boneheadedness is only part of a pattern that has bankrupted California and has Sacramento proposing to “borrow” billions from counties, cities and even special districts to balance its banana republic-like budget.

California’s horde in Congress are hiding under their desk lest they get hit in the face with Arnold’s “Hail Mary” pass insisting on Obama guaranteed, read subsidized, bonds or some other harebrained financial deal. It seems to be a race to see

In the 1980s when California was booming you’d see “ABC” signs in eastern airports meaning “Anyplace But California” then meaning “how about us not only them.” Now those signs are popping up again but in California and for the exact opposite reasons.

To date Schwarzenegger’s and his disloyal opposition’s solution has only been to raise taxes including posting the nation’s highest sales taxes and income tax rates creeping ever upward. Maybe about the only good news is that bad times seems to be reducing the flood of illegals across its Mexican border.

The Census is underway in California and will undoubtedly repaint its portrait as a coastal liberal versus inland and northern conservative minority versus southern progressive place run by elected officials beholding to public employee unions. A month ago voters soundly rejected a package of trumped up ballot measures to raise taxes and increase fees.

California has turned into a gigantic Detroit west and is awaiting its death.
