Kopechne Care

- An acquaintance sent me Gary DeMar writing on the Patriot Update on Saturday Aug 27, 2009, as the Ted Kennedy Memorial Mass is being said and because of what happened yesterday I chose to edit and add to it here.
Yesterday while in line at a deli counter I overheard a woman’s tirade about that one Ted Kennedy was worth a hundred stupid blondes. So here goes:
Death is the door we all have to pass through (Heb. 9:27). In life, no one is really equal, not even before the law. Ted Kennedy survived the Chappaquiddick “incident” because of the sentiment the people had for his two assassinated brothers, and the fact that Ted could bring home a lot of pork, his wealth, his and his families influence and connections.
If Ted had not been a Kennedy he would have been drummed out of office and prosecuted for leaving the scene of a car crash costing Mary Jo Kopechne her life. He left the scene of the accident, passing homes with lights on as he made his way back to his hotel, and he did not report the incident. L: ater he said he saw no houses nearby even though one is a stone’s throw from the bridge, in plain sight and had lights on.
It was left to two fishermen to report the submerged car at 8:20 the next morning. A diver was brought in, and Kopechne’s lifeless body was discovered around 8:45 AM.
The diver, John Farrar, later testified at the inquest that Kopechne’s face was pressed up in the car in the spot where an air bubble would have formed. He interpreted this to mean that Kopechne had survived for a while after the initial accident in the air bubble, and concluded:
“Had I received a call within five to ten minutes of the accident occurring, and was able, as I was the following morning, to be at the victim’s side within twenty-five minutes of receiving the call, in such event there is a strong possibility that she would have been alive on removal from the submerged car.”
Farrar believed that Kopechne “lived for at least two hours down there.” If you want to pass a healthcare bill, call it “Kopechne Care” as a reminder of how politicians abuse power and use their political clout, wealth if they have it, and connections.
Only after news of the car’s and body’s recovery did Kennedy come forward.
Some say Kennedy had a concussion - there was never any medical evidence of that — and wasn’t thinking clearly. Others say the 37-year old was on another of his notorious drunks and out of his mind. Others say the unthinkable: that he did not value a human life. That he tried to cover up.
Another friend recounted to me how Mary Joe’s mother told him she and family had been handsomely bribed so much so she no longer had to work, and retired to Florida.
“One more thing,” DeMar thinks, ” If Ted Kennedy had been a Republican, his obituary would have read something like this: ‘Former disgraced Senator Edward Kennedy died this week. He is most remembered for leaving the scene of an accident where he left a woman to drown as he waited until the next morning to report what he said was an accident. This gave him an opportunity to work on his story for the press in hopes of staying in office. It didn’t work.’” Conservatives hold their leaders to a higher standard.”
I think what is going on in Massachusetts includes: some genuine grief, some sanctimony, a lot of theater, and plenty of naked politics.
Oh, by the way Kennedy was judged guilty of a misdemeanor had his driver’s license suspended for a year and was given a two-month suspended sentence. I also vehemently disagree with the loud mouthed woman in the deli line.

Joker: The late Senator has a long, long, long way to go before sainthood - notwithstanding all the sanctimony.

Richard,
I totally agree with this article. Ted Kennedy is the prime example of excess, abuse of power, elitism and decadence in this country and I’m talking JUST about the politicians. And you’re right, if it had been a Republican he would have been crucified. But a Republican gets vilified for much less. And now we have an unconscionable President elected by the pervading element of people who have NO moral compass and it will only get worse and it’s going to cost us dearly. Maybe we are getting what we deserve. But one has to ask, ‘when are “they” going to get what they deserve?’ I’m reminded of a scripture in the Bible which says: “Vengence is mine, saith the Lord,” and believe me, “they” are going to wish they had ALL “fessed up” and gotten right with God AND the American people when it’s all over and the smoke clears, if it does.

Susan: Thank you for your comment. Ted Kennedy is dead and buried. If part of his legacy is the lesson of moral, ethical action and personal responsibility his life shoul;d be celebrated.
